How does a laser rangefinder work?
Laser rangefinders, as a high precision and high speed measurement tool, work simply and efficiently. Below, we will discuss in detail how a laser rangefinder works.
1. Laser Emission
The work of a laser rangefinder begins with the emission of a laser. Inside the laser rangefinder is a laser transmitter, which is responsible for emitting a short but intense laser pulse. The high frequency and short pulse width of this laser pulse enables it to reach the target object in a very short time.
2. Laser reflection
When a laser pulse hits a target object, part of the laser energy is absorbed by the target object and part of the laser light is reflected back. The reflected laser beam carries distance information about the target object.
3. Laser reception
The laser rangefinder also has a receiver inside to receive the reflected laser beam. This receiver filters out unwanted light and receives only the reflected laser pulses that correspond to the laser pulses from the laser transmitter.
4. Time Measurement
Once the receiver receives the reflected laser pulse, a highly accurate timer inside the laser rangefinder stops the clock. This timer is able to accurately record the time difference Δt between the transmission and reception of the laser pulse.
5. Distance Calculation
With the time difference Δt, the laser rangefinder can calculate the distance between the target object and the laser rangefinder through a simple mathematical formula. This formula is: distance = (speed of light × Δt) / 2. Since the speed of light is a known constant (about 300,000 kilometers per second), the distance can be easily calculated by measuring the time difference Δt.
A laser rangefinder works by transmitting a laser pulse, measuring the time difference between its transmission and reception, and then using the product of the speed of light and the time difference to calculate the distance between the target object and the laser rangefinder. This measurement method has the advantages of high accuracy, high speed and non-contact, which makes the laser rangefinder widely used in various fields.
